MOUNT PLEASANT – Tarrence Taylor ran for 258 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Mount Pleasant Tigers to a 40-17 victory Friday night over the Paris Wildcats in the season opener for both teams.
Mount Pleasant wide receiver K.D. Cannon also dazzled. The Baylor commit caught five catches from quarterback Cullen Grubbs for 65 yards and two touchdowns and also had an interception and several long punt returns.
Sophomore cornerback Keanon Brown scored the Tigers’ other touchdown on a 35-yard interception with 36 seconds left in the game.
Mount Pleasant struck for two touchdowns in the last two minutes of the first half and two more in the last one minute of the fourth quarter.
Sophomore quarterback Quez Allen figured in both Paris touchdowns. Allen, who completed 11-of-27 passes for 117 yards, threw a 7-yard pass to Jordan Williams and ran 3 yards for another.
The Wildcats’ Blake Beshirs kicked a 27-yard field goal.
Mount Pleasant opened the scoring midway through the second quarter on Cannon’s 28-yard pass from Grubbs against double coverage.
Paris responded on the ensuing drive on Allen’s TD pass to Williams.
But Taylor scored twice for Mount Pleasant late in the first half to give the Tigers a 21-7 halftime lead.
The senior running back scored from six yards out with 2:01 to play — set up by another sensational 28-yard catch by Cannon — and added an 80-yard scamper 30 seconds before halftime.
Allen’s touchdown run early in the third quarter brought Paris within a touchdown at 21-14.
Mount Pleasant fumbled the first snap of the next drive at its own 14. Paris recovered, and the Wildcats were in the red zone with a chance to tie the game.
The Wildcats were unable to cash in, however. Held to three yards on three plays, Paris settled for a field goal — Beshirs’ kick from the 17 bringing the Wildcats to within 21-17 going into the fourth quarter.
Mount Pleasant outscored Paris 19-0 in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory. The Wildcats couldn’t get anything going.
Taylor scored from five yards out on the first play of the fourth quarter to make it 27-17.
That’s where the score remained until the final minute. Grubbs connected with Cannon on a 14-yard touchdown pass with 56 seconds left in the game, and just 20 seconds later Brown picked off Allen’s pass and ran it 35 yards into the end zone to cap the Tigers’ 40-17 victory.
