Update: The National Weather Service has now extended the Heat Advisory to Sunday, August 5. This means the conditions are still favorable for heat related illnesses and very dangerous. Drink plenty of water and stay indoors or in shade as much as possible. The elderly are especially susceptible to these dangerous conditions, so be sure and check on them when you can.
Below is an article published on Thursday with projected temperatures throughout the weekend. Keep watching the Extra! to stay update on our local weather.
It’s no surprise that the summer here in Texas is hot. It’s no surprise to residents here and probably no surprise to residents in New York. Why? Because our intense heat, and the extreme drought condition in the hearland of our country is dominating the headlines in weather discussion.
Some areas, to the north of Texas, have seen a significant increase in extreme drought conditions since the summer started. In the photo to the right (Photo Source: www.weather.com) you can see the areas currently in drought. Amazingly, almost 50% of our country is in the severe drought category, including ourselves. A Heat Advisory is currently in effect for us until 8pm tonight, however, it is likely that first thing in the morning, another will be issued for tomorrow. This means that not only is the heat uncomfortable, but also very dangerous. These conditions make the likelyhood of heat strokes and heat related illnesses higher during the heat of the day. Heat strokes claim the lives of at least 240 people a year in the United States.
Moniter your conditions and stay inside, if at all possible. If it is not possible, drink plenty of water and frequently seek shade. With the humidity levels low — making the air dry — and little wind blowing, your body has a harder time defending the heat than in other conditions.
As of Thursday, August 2, the projected forecast predicts 100+ degree temperature on through the weekend, except on Sunday, where luckily enough, it’s only supposed to by 99 degrees. Our high today is a staggering 108 degrees, with 106 degrees as the predicted high for tomorrow, and 103 degrees on Saturday.
There looks to be a small chance of rain on Sunday at 20%. In preliminary discussion and research, there may be potential for rain and thunderstorms at the first of next week, starting on Monday with a 30% chance of precipitation. Let us hope so.
