PHS spring relays event is renamed the 2014 Deon Minor Wildcat Relays
Paris High School’s track invitational has a new name to honor a legendary student athlete.
The Deon Minor Wildcat Relays will bring some of the best track and field athletes to Paris High School. The Relays were renamed in honor of track and field champion Deon Minor and he will be honored in a ceremony during the 2014 Deon Minor Wildcat Relays on Friday, March 21, at 5:30 p.m..
While at Paris High School, Minor won two state championships Division 4A-400m. He was the state and national record holder his senior year in 1991. Because he was such an outstanding runner, he was named to the Texas UIL All-Century Track & Field Team as the best quarter miler in 100 years.
During his time at Baylor University, he earned 14 All-American honors and was a four-time NCAA champion in the 400m and 4×400 m relay. He won two consecutive gold medals in the relay at the IAAF World Indoor Championships setting a world record of 3:02.83 minutes in the mile relay. He was a Junior World Champion in Seoul, Korea, and was a U.S. Olympic Trial qualifier.
Minor said he could not describe the way he felt about the recognition. “This is awesome…the Deon Minor Wildcat Relays,” Minor said. “It really makes me feel good to know that Paris ISD decided to rename the track meet in my honor.”
“I am looking forward to the first annual Deon Minor Wildcat Relays in March and having my name on it for years to come.”
Minor’s influence is still felt today, as Paris High’s track team consistently competes at the highest levels of Class AAA.
Minor currently is working for Ultimate Performance Sport Management, a company owned by 4-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson. Deon began working with Ultimate Performance in 2004 and is head of client management with the company. While working with UPSM, Deon has been responsible for managing careers of Olympians, World Champions, World and National record holders.
Deon is a current member of the Association of Athletics Managers (AAM). The AAM is a group of the world’s leading managers in Athletics (Track and Field, Road Running, Marathons, Cross-Country) who represent the majority of the top athletes in the world.
Deon resides in San Antonio, Texas with his wife Claudia and kids Bradley and Bayleigh Minor.
