I’m not sure anyone in the gym expected the game to go quite like it did Friday night. The North Lamar Panthers and the Canton Eagles faced each other in the Area round of the playoffs. North Lamar defeated Rains 67-21 on Tuesday to advance to the matchup in Royce City.
North Lamar and Canton both seemed a little jittery at first. After one quarter it was a close game with North Lamar up 10-8. The second quarter, though was a different story as North Lamar broke the game open by outscoring the Eagles 19-10 in the quarter.
The third quarter and fourth quarter, the Panthers locked down defensively just like they did in round one of the playoffs. North Lamar held Canton to only 13 second-half points. This is after only allowing five points in the second half of their game against Rains.
“[Defense] is part of our program. That’s first and foremost,” Coach Homer Garner said after the win. “When you step into the gym at North Lamar, we’re going to play defense and we’re going to rebound.”
North Lamar pulled away to claim a 70-31 victory in the Area round of the playoffs. North Lamar’s size seemed to be too much for the Eagles with Hunter Sartor, Ty Jones and Tyler Anthony down low. The Panthers grabbed 38 rebound on the night, with 14 of those being offensive boards. Sartor grabbed nine boards and seven of those were offensive.
“Most of us have been playing together since seventh grade,” Hunter Sartor said after the game when asked about the teams chemistry. “So our chemistry is on.”
Sartor also led the team in scoring with 22 points while Versache Buchanan knocked down 14 points and finished 4-7 from behind the three-point line.
With the win, North Lamar moves on to the Regional Quarter-Finals on Tuesday night. The Panthers will play Brownsboro at 7:00 p.m. in Wills Point.
