It’s been a long time since the North Lamar Panthers basketball team has defeated the Paris High Wildcats twice in one season. That streak is now over as North Lamar finished the sweep on Friday night at Wildcat gym with a 57-47 win. Since the two teams met on January 24th at North Lamar, Paris had been 4-0 including a 119 point outburst over Atlanta. North Lamar was coming in at 2-2 since that meeting and in second place in the District.
North Lamar used a combination of stingy defense and clutch shooting to defeat their cross-town rival. Paris High did a good job shutting down North Lamar big man Hunter Sartor. Sartor only had three points and four rebounds on the night. Where he struggled, though, Levi Porter and Tyler Anthony picked up the slack.
Porter, a sophomore for North Lamar, finished with 27 points. He was 5-9 from the floor, including 2-4 from three point range. The dagger came at the free-throw line, though. Porter went 15-17 from the free throw line.
“There’s a reason they call them free,” Porter said after the game. “You’ve got to step up and knock those down.”
Knock them down is exactly what he did too. Anthony led the way on the glass for the Panthers. Tyler grabbed 14 rebounds with seven of them coming on the offensive side.
Seljah Johnson of the Wildcats did his best to keep the game close. Seljah finished with 19 points and six rebounds. Nobody else had more than nine points and four rebounds for the Wildcats.
The turning point of the game came in the second quarter. With the game tied at 22, North Lamar went on a 9-1 run to open things up before half time. Paris would actually climb back and take a one-point lead in the third quarter. However, Levi Porter started making foul shots and North Lamar outscored Paris 15-9 in the final frame.
With the win, North Lamar has a chance to claim the District title on Tuesday night with a win at home against Pleasant Grove. Tip-off is set for approximately 7:30 at Panther gym.
