New Boston – Head coach Tommy Felty has been saying from the first day of practice, “If we will minimize mistakes and play smart, we will give ourselves a chance to win.”
On Friday night against New Boston, the Panthers did not do that and it cost them. Although New Boston is a 2A school, they are ranked No. 4 in the state in 2A and Felty knew they would have to play near perfect to win the game. At the end of the first quarter North Lamar was down 14-0 thanks to a fumbled kickoff and a pass interference call in the end zone. It didn’t help, either, that the Panthers had two drives deep in New Boston territory stall on failed fourth down conversions. The Panthers also allowed a 62 yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
The only score the Panthers could muster on the night was an 11 yard run by Torrey Smith with 4:02 left in the ball game. By this time, though, New Boston was up 41-7 and that’s how the final score would remain. North Lamar moves to 1-3 on the season with one more game before district play. The Panthers will travel to Quinlan Ford next Friday night at 7:30.
