Who will end up with the No. 1 seed to the Region XIV men’s basketball tournament next with it – and with it the automatic berth to the national junior college tournament March 18-23 in Hutchinson, Kan.
We’ll know later in the day on this the last day of the regular season. But if you are really curious about the various possibilities, read on, friends.
Here’s the way I see it:
The 14 teams in Region XIV are divided into a North and South zone – seven teams each. In the North are Bossier, Kilgore, Navarro, Panola, Paris, Trinity Valley and Tyler. In the South are Angelina, Blinn, Coastal Bend, Jacksonville, Lamar State-Port Arthur, Lee and San Jacinto.
They play a 19-game conference slate – a single game against the seven teams in the opposing zone and a home-and-away round robin against the six other teams in the same zone.
The top two teams in each zone are guaranteed a first-round bye and a Top 4 seed, although it is possible for two teams in the same zone to be seeded first and second.
After the top four seeds are determined, the remainder of the conference is seeded 5 through 12, without regard to zone.
Here is the tie-breaker situation between the various teams, as laid out in the conference’s tie-breaking procedures. Several teams will end up with the same record, and here’s how it will shake out.
Who ends up with which seeds will decide the match-ups at next week’s post-season tournament at Herrington Patriot Center on the UT-Tyler campus. The tournament starts Tuesday and runs through Saturday.
First, here’s how each team will break any ties that result after today’s six men’s conference games.
After we discuss who has the tie-breaker advantage against whom, we’ll look at the various scenarios that could play out today, and how they will affect next week’s match-ups:
KILGORE:
- If Kilgore and Navarro finish in a tie, the tie-breaker belongs to Kilgore. They split their 1-1 series, but Kilgore is 8-1 against the five other north zone teams (losing to Paris) while Navarro is 7-2 (losing twice to Tyler).
- If Kilgore is tied with San Jacinto, the tie-breaker belongs to Kilgore because it San Jacinto 75-65 on Jan. 5.
- If Kilgore is in a tie with Jacksonville, the tie-breaker belongs to Jacksonville, which beat Kilgore 89-82 on Nov. 28.
NAVARRO:
- Tie-breaker with Kilgore goes to Kilgore, as explained above.
- Tie-breaker with San Jacinto goes to San Jacinto, which beat Navarro 82-72 on Dec. 8.
- Tie-breaker with Jacksonville goes to Navarro, which beat Jacksonville 62-59 on Nov. 20.
JACKSONVILLE:
- Tie-breaker with Kilgore goes to Jacksonville, which beat Kilgore 89-82 on Nov. 28.
- Tie-breaker with Navarro goes to Navarro, which beat Jacksonville 62-59 on Nov. 20.
SAN JACINTO:
- Tie-breaker with Kilgore goes to Kilgore, which beat San Jacinto 75-65 on Jan. 5.
- Tie-breaker with Navarro goes to San Jacinto, which beat Navarro 82-72 on Dec. 8.
TYLER:
- Tie-breaker with Lee goes to Lee, which beat Tyler 73-62 on Dec. 8.
LEE:
- Tie-breaker with Tyler goes to Lee, which beat Tyler 73-62 on Dec. 8.
- Tie-breaker with Trinity Valley goes to Trinity Valley, which beat Lee 88-81 on Jan. 5.
TRINITY VALLEY:
- Tie-breaker with Lee goes to Trinity Valley, which beat Lee 88-81 on Jan. .5.
- Tie-breaker with Angelina goes to Angelina, which beat Trinity Valley 62-60 on Dec. 5.
- Tie-breaker with Lamar State goes to Lamar State, which beat Trinity Valley 77-75 on Nov. 28.
ANGELINA:
- Tie-breaker with Trinity Valley goes to Angelina, which beat Trinity Valley 62-60 on Dec. 5.
- Tie-breaker with Paris goes to Angelina, which beat Paris 68-66 on Jan. 5.
LAMAR STATE-PORT ARTHUR:
- Tie-breaker with Trinity Valley goes to Lamar State, which beat Trinity Valley 77-75 on Nov. 28.
- Tie-breaker with Paris goes to Paris, which beat Lamar State 76-67 on Dec. 5.
PARIS:
- Tie-breaker with Angelina goes to Angelina, which beat Paris 68-66 on Jan. 5.
- Tie-breaker with Lamar State goes to Paris, which beat Lamar State 76-67 on Dec. 5.
Coastal Bend and Blinn went into Saturday assured of the No. 11 and 12 seed respectively. Coastal Bend was 7-11 going into Saturday and could not catch up with Paris (9-10). Blinn was 4-15 going into Saturday’s games.
Now we’ll look at the different outcomes today would affect the seedings and next week’s match-ups:
IF KILGORE BEATS TYLER:
- Kilgore (15-4) will be the 1 seed, and then:
- If Navarro also wins, beating Trinity Valley, Navarro (15-4) will be the 2 seed; the Jacksonville-San Jacinto winner (14-5) will be the 3 seed; the Jacksonville-San Jacinto loser (13-6) will be the 4 seed.
- If Navarro loses and Jacksonville wins, Navarro (14-5) will be the 2 seed; Jacksonville (14-5) will be the 3 seed; San Jacinto (13-6) will be the 4 seed.
- If Navarro loses and San Jacinto wins, San Jacinto (14-5) will be the 2 seed; Navarro (14-5) will be the 3 seed; Jacksonville (13-6) will be the 4 seed.
IF KILGORE LOSES AND NAVARRO WIN:
- Navarro (15-4) will be the 1 seed, and then:
- If Jacksonville beats San Jacinto, Jacksonville (14-5) will be the 2 seed, Kilgore (14-5) will be the 3 seed; San Jacinto will be the 4 seed.
- If San Jacinto wins, Kilgore will be the 2 seed; San Jacinto will be the 3 seed; Jacksonville will be the 4 seed.
IF BOTH KILGORE AND NAVARRO LOSE:
- If San Jacinto beats Jacksonville, Kilgore (14-5) will be the No. 1 seed; San Jacinto (14-5) will be the 2 seed; Navarro (14-5) will be the 3 seed; Jacksonville (13-6) will be the 4 seed.
- If Jacksonville defeats San Jacinto, Jacksonville (14-5) will be the 1 seed; Kilgore (14-5) will be the 2 seed; Navarro (14-5) will be the 3 seed; San Jacinto (134-6) will be the 4 seed.
IF TYLER BEATS KILGORE, OR IF TYLER LOSES AND LEE ALSO LOSES:
- Tyler (13-6) would be the No. 5 seed. Tyler would actually have the same record as the San Jacinto-Jacksonville loser, and has the tie-breaker over both teams, but both those teams are guaranteed a Top 4 seed..
IF TYLER LOSES AND LEE WINS:
- Lee (12-7) would have the No. 5 seed, and Tyler (12-7) would have the No. 6 seed.
IF LEE LOSES AND TRINITY VALLEY WINS:
- Trinity Valley (11-8) would have the No. 6 seed and Lee (11-8) would have the No. 7 seed.
IF TYLER, LEE AND TRINITY VALLEY WIN:
- Tyler (13-6) would have the No. 5 seed; Lee (12-7) would have the No. 6 seed; Trinity Valley (11-8) would have the No. 7 seed.
IF TRINITY VALLEY LOSES:
- Trinity Valley (10-9) would have the same record as the winner of the Angelina-Lamar State game. Since Trinity Valley lost to both during the season, the Angelina-Lamar State winner would get the No. 7 seed, and Trinity Valley would have the No. 8 seed.
IF ANGELINA BEATS LAMAR STATE:
- If Trinity Valley also wins, Trinity Valley (11-8) would be the No. 7 seed; Angelina (10-9) would be the No. 8 seed; Paris (9-10) would be the No. 9 seed; Lamar State would be the No. 10 seed.
- If Trinity Valley loses, Angelina (10-9) would be the No. 7 seed, Trinity Valley (10-9) would be the No. 8 seed; Paris would be the No. 9 seed; and Lamar State (9-10) would be the No. 10 seed.
IF LAMAR STATE BEATS ANGELINA:
- If Trinity Valley also wins, Trinity Valley (11-8) would be the No. 7 seed; Lamar State (10-9) would be the No. 8 seed; Angelina (9-10) would be the No. 9 seed; Paris would be the No. 10 seed.
- If Trinity Valley loses, Lamar State (10-9) would be the No. 7 seed, Trinity Valley (10-9) would be the No. 8 seed; Angelina (9-10) would be the No. 9 seed; and Paris would be the No. 10 seed.
Coastal Bend, which took a 7-11 record into its Saturday game with Lee, is assured of finishing 11th,.Blinn which finished 4-15 will be the No. 12 seed.
