Alan McMillan with Cypress Basic Hospice will present:

The Health Care Cost Crisis and Hospice Care

In 2010, Medicare spent $50 billion on physician and hospital care for patients who were in their last two months of life. That is 25% of all Medicare spending. And studies indicate that 20 –30% of these expenditures may have had no meaningful impact on the patient’s quality or length of life. This presentation reviews what impact end-of-life care issues is having on the cost of health care, and what solutions should be considered in the development of public policy. Also covered will be actions that employers (those that provide health insurance to their employees) can take to impact the cost of end-of-life care covered by their health plan. Finally, the myth of “death panels” in the Affordable Care Act will be explained.

This information is especially timely, as we wait for a decision from the Supreme Court on the Affordable Care Act.

Alan McMillin is the Director of Development at Cypress Basin Hospice.
