PJC Honors top Theatre Students

austinAt the end of the Paris Junior College student music recital on May 1, two students were surprised with awards by PJC music instructor and director of choirs Philip Briggs.

Freshman Haley Hines and sophomore Austin Naron were recognized as outstanding musical theatre students. The awards are given to those students demonstrating the most growth in their skills, and are not automatically awarded every year.

“The award is for recognizing students with the musical theatre concentration who go above and beyond,” said PJC drama instructor William Walker. “They don’t wait to be told to do things. They go out and do their own research; they find their own music and don’t wait for us to dig it out for them; they keep their portfolios together and they are constantly wanting us to help them improve but they don’t wait for us to tell them what to do, they go do it themselves and then come back and ask ‘is this right.’ “That’s why we give this award out. This year it was Haley and Austin who have really gone above and beyond.”

Hines will be returning to PJC. Naron will be transferring to the University of Tulsa.
