PARIS – Panola College recovered from an 0-14 deficit and went on to defeat Paris Junior College 56-50 Wednesday night in a Region XIV women’s basketball game.

The Fillies swept the home-and-away series, completing their regular season at 14-16 overall and 6-10 in conference. Paris’ Lady Dragons fell to 10-17 overall and 5-10 in league play with one game remaining at San Jacinto on Saturday.

A win Saturday would give Paris the No. 6 seed in the eight-team Region XIV tournament next week at UT-Tyler’s Herrington Patriot Center. The likely playoff pairing is Paris vs. No. 3 seed Angelina at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Catarina Jones, who had half of Panola’s six 3-pointers, and Atoe Jackson scored 11 points each for the Fillies.

Voche’ Martin was 8-of-9 on her free throws and led Paris with 14 points, including 8-of-9 from the free throw line. Kelsei Ewings added 11 points.

From its poor start, Panola outscored the home team 29-9 for the remainder of the first half, then made the first four points of the second half to increase the lead to 13 points at 33-20.

Midway through the second half, Panola led 45-32, but the Lady Dragons scored 10 straight points to get within 45-42 at 7:06 to play.

Shanice Hill and Ewings made back-to-back 3-pointers – the Lady Dragons only points from outside – to get the drive going..

Shanica Baker’s drive and foul shot gave Panola a 52-46 lead with 2:51 to play, but goals by Ewings and Maeghan Scott got the Lady Dragons back in the game at 52-50 at 2:01.

Paris got the ball back, but Panola picked off an errant pass inside, which started a fast break the other way. The Fillies got the ball to Jones down court, and her lay-up gave Panola a 54-50 advantage at 1:05.

Paris missed its next shot, Panola rebounded, and Jackson added two insurance points on free throws with 40 seconds to play.
