PARIS – Knocking down 3-pointers like rain, the Coastal Bend Cougars went on a 19-3 run midway through the first half Wednesday night and cruised to a 71-63 victory over Paris Junior College.

Brandon Golden

Brandon Golden scored a game-high 20 points for Coastal Bend (6-1 overall, 2-0 in Region 14). Donald Dallas added 14 points and La Darrien Williams 11. In the first half alone, Golden made 3-of-3 three-point attempts and Williams was 3-of-4 from outside.Chris Jones led Paris (6-4, 1-1) with 15 points, Mike Harmon scored 11, and Anthony Adams added 10 points for the Dragons, who had just 2-of-7 first-half 3-pointers.

“My hat’s off to them. Anytime you can hit 66 percent (10-of-15) from the 3-point line, you’re going to be tough to beat,” PJC coach Chuck Taylor said.

“We were fortunate to make a lot,” Coastal Bend coach Larry Mendez agreed.

Both teams agreed that another key to the Cougars’ big win on the road was Coastal Bend’s ability to chase down the loose balls.

“We didn’t get any of the 50-50 balls. None. I can’t remember a time that we didn’t get a single rebound when there was a 50-50 chance as to who would get it,” Taylor said.

Larry Mendez

“You know, Paris is a heck of a rebounding team. All year, they’ve been rebounding their butts off, and that was one of our concerns – their offensive rebounding skills. I told our guys, ’The loose balls. You’ve got to chase them down, especially on the road.’ “ Mendez said.

With the win, Coastal Bend joins Lamar State-Port Arthur and Navarro as the only Region 14 teams without a loss. All are 2-0.

“This was a big road win. We’ve got to keep it going,” Mendez said.

Here are the results from the five other Region 14 games Wednesday:

  • Lamar State-Port Arthur (8-0, 1-0) at Trinity Valley (8-2, 1-0), won 77-75 by Lamar State.
  • San Jacinto (7-1, 0-1) at Panola (6-4, 0-1), won 96-80 by San Jacinto.
  • Jacksonville (7-3, 0-1) at Kilgore (10-0, 1-0, won 89-82 by Jacksonville.
  •  Blinn (5-4, 0-1) at Bossier Parish (5-1, 0-1), won 66-63 by Bossier Parish.
  • Lee (8-3, 1-0) at Navarro (7-3, 1-0), won 69-66 by Navarro.

Tyler and Angelina were idle.

Paris jumped off to a 5-0 lead against Coastal Bend, but the Cougars came back strong, scoring 15 of its first 16 points on 3-point shots. Trailing 12-8, the Cougars scored 19 of the next 22 points as Golden and Williams fired away from long range.

After that spurt, Coastal Bend was ahead 27-15, en route to a 40-24 halftime advantage.

Neither of Paris’ first-half 3-pointers came from the Dragons’ top shooters from outside. Antonio Arnold had 2 points at the half, and both Eddie Leal and Harmon were scoreless. For the game, Paris was 4-of-14 — one from Harmon, one from Jones, one from Delvin Dickerson and one from Leal.

Adams, still ailing from a hip injury scored in Saturday’s win over No. 13-ranked Connors State, played only four minutes of the first half and got just 2 points on 1-of-2 field goals. His eight other points came during 14 minutes of second-half action.

Paris outscored Coastal Bend 40-31 in the second half, getting as close as 53-45 on Harmon’s 3-pointer. Coastal Bend led 67-53 with three minutes to play, and Paris closed on a 10-4 run to make the final score respectable.

Paris missed the inside rebounding and scoring of 6-6 sophomore Morris Mitchell, who sat out the game with a severely sprained ankle suffered in PJC’s victory Saturday over No. 13 Connors State.

“We were unable to hold them to one shot,” Taylor said. “We’d stop them, but we were unable to get the rebound and they picked up a number of second-chance goals.”
