Lady Dragons beat McLennan College 45-37 for second straight win

JACKSONVILLE, Texas – The Lady Dragons of Paris Junior College started fast and finished fast, making up for some problems in between, as they defeated McLennan College 45-37 Friday night in a four-team tournament at Jacksonville.

Jacksonville defeated Stephen F. Austin club team 95-39 in the other game in the Jacksonville Classic on Friday.

Saturday, the two Region 14 teams switch opponents. Paris will play SFA Club at 2 p.m., followed by Jacksonville vs. McLennan.

“We got out to a 9-2 lead, but struggled after that. We missed a lot of layups and had 10 turnovers in the first half. We turned it over and didn’t finish around the basket,” PJC head coach Sean LeBeauf  said.

McLennan led by five points at the half.

“We gained control once we began to defend and hold them to one shot. We were able to create a more up-tempo game, plus we were much better getting to the free throw line. We only shot two free throws the first half,” LeBeauf said.

The Lady Dragons had erased McLennan’s lead and moved ahead by double digits with two and a half minutes to play. McLennan cut the lead to nine points by hitting a 3-point shot while the Lady Dragons missed two free throws.

Kelsei Ewings and Shanice Vaughan were both in double figures for PJC. LeBeauf praised the second-half inside play of center Karmyn Jackson, who also finished well around the basket.
