PEF awards $104,200 in scholarships

PEF_03Paris Education Foundation handed out $104,200 in 82 scholarships for Paris High School graduates Tuesday in an awards ceremony at Paris High School.

“It’s about these kids and honoring them and what they’ve accomplished,” PHS Principal Gary Preston said. “They’re going to make us proud.”

Preston said he has been honored to serve as their principal.

“I have watched you go from being scared little freshmen to being fine young men and young ladies,” he said.

The scholarships are awarded on a point system based on financial need, extracurricular and work activities, teacher evaluation and class rank. The students are ranked and assigned scholarships “until we run out of money,” PEF President Patrick Cannon said.

In the last 25 years, Paris Education Foundation has awarded $1.15 million in scholarships and $69,140 in teacher grants and awards for excellence. PEF has two major fund raisers to support its endeavors, the J.T. Davis Golf Tournament (scheduled for June 7) and I Love Paris banquet (scheduled for Oct. 4).

Cannon told the graduating seniors to remember they need their family members.

“They have gotten you to this point, and we’re expecting a lot,” Cannon said. “You’re going to do well and make Paris and Paris High School very proud.”
