North Lamar advances thanks to a dominating performance from Brandon Dusenberry
Aaron Edwards provided the offense and Brandon Dusenberry pitched a shutout as the North Lamar Panthers completed the two-game sweep of the Pittsburg Pirates in their Regional Quarterfinal playoff series. With the 1-0 win over Pittsburg, North Lamar advances to play Melissa-who defeated Ferris in three games.
Edwards, who has been a lot of the Panthers’ offense in the first inning during the postseason, lined a double off the left field fence with two-outs in the first inning. Edwards stole third base and then scored on a wild pitch by Brandon Colbert. Little did the Panthers know, it would be the only run they would score in the ball game.
Dusenberry made sure that lone run would stand up for the Panthers as he pitched seven, strong innings for North Lamar. Brandon gave up four hits, walked two and struck out eight in the win. He only needed 90 pitches to get through the game as well, with 59 of them being strikes.
“Work ahead in the count,” Dusenberry said when asked about his approach Friday. “I can throw the pitches I wanted to pitch. It’s what I’ve been working on all week.”
Dusenberry didn’t get the result he wanted last week against Spring Hill so he was determined to get it this weekend. That’s exactly what happened too. North Lamar, on the offensive side, has to be thankful for his pitching. The offense couldn’t manage anything off of Colbert, with the exception of the run they squeaked out. North Lamar only had three hits total off of the starting pitcher, who walked one and struck out five.
Jacob Cowling did connect on a triple but the runner was quickly erased on a suicide bunt attempt. The only other hit the Panthers got was a single by Braydon Steed. The offensive production can be low, though, if you’re going to get pitching performances like the Panthers got on Friday Night.
North Lamar will now get ready to play Melissa in the next round of the playoffs. Details have yet to be finalized for the series dates and times.
