The North Lamar Panthers got a big boost on Friday night in their district opener as senior Daniel Gibbons returned to the mound. Gibbons, who suffered an injury early in the season, was given the ball as North Lamar welcomed Pittsburg to town. Behind a strong pitching performance North Lamar got the victory 5-1.

Gibbons struck out 10 batters in five innings of work against the Pirates. He did have a little trouble with his command early, though, as he did walk six as well. Gibbons only allowed one hit over the five innings and no runs.

“He’s wanted the ball,” Coach Igleheart said about Gibbons’ return. “He’s a competitor….we knew we couldn’t go wrong either way.”

Brandon Dusenberry came into the game in relief in the sixth inning for the Panthers and picked up where Gibbons left off. Dusenberry struck out three of the six batters he faced and only gave up two hits for North Lamar.

North Lamar was able to capitalize on four errors from the Pittsburg defense. Between the Pirates errors and the aggressiveness on the base paths, the Panthers scored five runs on only four hits. Braydon Steed had the only two RBI for the Panthers as the rest of the runs scored were unearned.
