North Lamar Pantherettes get much-needed win over Pittsburg
North Lamar head coach Chris Arledge knows his team has been playing then their district record would indicate. The Pantherettes were 1-6 in District 13-3A action but could easily be 3-4. North Lamar lost to Paris High when Paris made two unbelievable three-pointers in the final 15 seconds of regulation to tie the game. Atlanta beat North Lamar on a last second layup. Of course coach Arledge will be the first to point out it doesn’t matter how close you are, a loss is still a loss.
On Tuesday night, the Pantherettes did what they could to get back into the playoff race with a 33-26 win over Pittsburg. North Lamar used suffocating defense in the first half to spark the team. The Pantherettes, fueled by Cozy Brown and Lexie Stephens caused 25 turnovers on the night.
Fifteen of those turnovers were steals. Brown only recorded two steals on the night but was responsible for several other steals as she deflected Lady Pirate passes into the arms of her North Lamar teammates. Stephens was also the cause of several extra turnovers in the game.
It was a total team win for the Pantherettes as nobody scored in double-figures. After a 19-9 halftime lead, North Lamar had a lull in the third quarter as they only managed four points. The fourth quarter, though, North Lamar once again turned up the intensity and drained a few clutch free throws down the stretch.
With the win, North Lamar is now tied for fourth place with Atlanta with two games remaining. North Lamar will play Atlanta in their final district game next Tuesday. The top four teams reach the playoffs.
