Orr Honda Athletes of the Week - Daisy Rangel and Sam Erickson

Orr Honda Athlete of the Week logoIn the middle of football season and the volleyball playoffs, it’s a different sport that takes center stage for North Lamar. Sam Erickson and Daisy Rangel are both standout cross country runners for North Lamar. Erickson, the younger brother of Kara Erickson just qualified for state in cross country. Kara last year tied the North Lamar school record in high jump and placed 2nd in state for the same event.

Sam, a senior at North Lamar, has been running cross country all four years in high school. He hopes to attend either Baylor University or Texas A&M after he graduates. Although he doesn’t plan on running on the collegiate level he does want to major in Biology or some type of science. With an all A average, that shouldn’t be a problem for Erickson.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the community,” Sam said when asked how it felt to be chosen for the Orr Honda athlete of the week.

When he’s not at school or studying, Sam likes to spend time with his brother and he likes to run. Averaging 30-40 miles a week running is what keeps him competing at a strong level.

Daisy Rangel is just a sophomore at North Lamar. She’s attended the school her whole life and has been running since Junior High. Daisy also plays on the Varsity Soccer team for North Lamar. Her grades are good and she’s already making plans to attend college somewhere. She’s not completely sure where, but she hopes wherever it is it’ll involve running or soccer.

“[I’m] happy. We have good teammates and we all support one another,” Daisy said about being named the Orr athlete of the week.

Her and Sam both credit Coach Henderson in helping them get where they are.

“She’s very supportive of us,” Daisy said about Henderson.

When she’s not running or at school, you can find Daisy hanging out with her friends and family.

Congratulations to both these students for their outstanding commitment to excellence-not only on the athletic field but also in the classroom and community.
