North Lamar Pantherettes lose heartbreaker to end season
The North Lamar Pantherettes entered Thursday’s contest with Paris High tied for third place in district 13-3A. The winner of Thursday’s game would face Pleasant Grove on Friday for the right to go to the playoffs.
Thursday would mark the third time the cross-town rivals have played this season. Both teams won on the other teams home court. Thursday’s game, however, would be played on a neutral site. Mt. Vernon was the neutral site that would host this mini-tournament.
Paris High jumped out to an early 7 – 2 lead. Less than three minutes into the game and coach Wooldridge was forced to take a timeout for the Pantherettes. North Lamar responded positively after the timeout as they ended the first quarter on a 14 – 3 run to take a 16 – 10 lead into the second quarter.
Paris High used the three point shot to climb back into the game. Paris would knock down three of them in the second quarter and ultimately finish with seven for the game. Entering the break, the two sides were deadlocked at 23.
North Lamar would come out of the break on fire as they went on a 7 – 0 run to start the third quarter. Down 30 – 23, Paris would finish the quarter on a 9 – 2 run to tie the game at 32.
This time, the LadyCats started on fire. Outscoring the Pantherettes 11- 3 to start the frame, North Lamar would start fouling Paris to send them to the free throw line. The strategy worked for North Lamar as they clawed their way back into the game. Down by four points Lexie Chancellor hit a three pointer with 15 seconds left. After Paris hit a pair of free throws, North Lamar had one last chance to tie the game. Unfortunately, several attempted three pointers bounced off the rim and Paris walked away with the 51 – 48 win.
“I’m proud of my girls,” said coach Wooldridge after the loss. “We competed the entire game.”
