Did you know that what you can’t see can damage your boat and harm Texas lakes? Zebra mussels are an invasive species that produce millions of microscopic larvae that can hide in your boat. Adult zebra mussels quickly mature to one and a half inches and attach to your boat’s motor, hull and to other hard surfaces.

You may know that zebra mussels have invaded Lake Texoma and are making their way to other Texas waterways. They spread by hitching a ride with boaters who unknowingly transport them from lake to lake on their boats, trailers and gear. Zebra mussels can seriously hamper your boat’s performance and can destroy our native aquatic plants and fish. They also threaten our fresh water supply.
Protect your boat and do your part to prevent the spread of zebra mussels in Texas: Next time you take your boat out of the water, take time to clean it. Remove all debris and drain all the water from your boat, engine, trailer and gear. Let it dry for at least a week or wash it all with hot, soapy water before boating in another water body.
