Grady Wright 20001Grady W. Wright, 89, of Deport, passed away Friday, December 20, 2013, at his home while surrounded by family.

Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23rd, at Bright-Holland Funeral Home with Rev. Buddy Greer & Rev. Mike Fortenberry officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Mr. Wright, the son of Henry Clay & Jessie Marshall Wright, was born June 10, 1924, in Deport.

Grady, at age 19, left college in his second year to volunteer for the draft into the U. S. Army in March of 1943. He served under General McArthur in the Philippines.  He also served in Japan along with other small countries. He left Japan on Dec. 1, 1945, after serving 26 months overseas. He was awarded 5 Bronze Stars, the Infantry Rifleman’s Badge, Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific Ribbon. Mr. Wright was part of three generations who served our country in the armed forces, his father, himself and his son Mike.

His teaching career began in the Veteran’s Vocational School thru Paris Junior College. He taught Vocational Agriculture & was Principal at Chapel Hill in Tyler from 1950 – 1964. Following that he was Superintendent at Blossom beginning in 1964, and became the Superintendent at Prairiland Consolidated Independent School District where he remained until his retirement in 1980. Mr. Wright touched the lives of many students.

He then served on the board of the Region VIII Service Center until 2001.

Mr. Wright enjoyed farming and raising cattle. He was a faithful member of New Hope Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Billie H. Wright & wife Robbie and Marshall G. Wright, a sister, Mary Ann Morton & husband John, a daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Wright,  a son-in-law, Ken Hunt, his father-in-law & mother-in-law, Claude & Allie Burks.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Burks Wright, whom he married on March 23, 1946, building sixty-seven years of family and memories, four children, Mike Wright & wife Sharon of Blossom, Pam Hunt of Deport, Kyle Wright & wife Lisa of Deport and Kent Wright of Deport, grandchildren, Dakota Wright & wife Amy, Brad Hunt, Jamie Mullins & wife Misty, Katie Duncan & husband Tony, Kandi Wright, Brandon Wright & wife Katy and Blaine Wright, nine great grandchildren, a sister, Geraldine Powers & husband Talma of Amarillo, two sisters-in-law, Ruby Wright of Waco and Cindy Burks of Campbell, a brother-in-law, Kenneth Burks of Hawkins  along with numerous nieces, nephews and a plethora of friends.

Casket bearers will be: Jerry Golden, Brad O’Brien, Kenneth Ashcraft, Homer Smith, Johnny Dawson and Jack Wright.
