NLHS Receives State 3A UIL Academic Trophy
The North Lamar Academic Team recently received the second place 3A UIL State Academic trophy for scoring 81 points at the state tournament. Seventy-four 3A Academic Teams from across Texas competed at the state meet on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin on May 20 and 21. Only Argyle scored more points than North Lamar.
“This is the highest ranking the North Lamar Academic Team has ever recorded, capping a very successful year that saw two state academic champions, four second place finishes, one third place finish, one fourth place finish, and one fifth place finish at state,” said UIL Coach Dennis Hodgkiss. “Considering the thousands of students who compete in the 23 UIL Academic events each year; this puts the North Lamar competitors in very select company.”
In addition, the year ended with North Lamar’s UIL Coach Kristi Hodgkiss being named as the National Speech and Debate Coach of the Year. She was earlier presented a plaque for her national recognition by UIL’s State Director Riggins.
North Lamar academic coaches for the 2013-2014 year include: Jan Bell, Computer Applications and Spelling; Teresa Bussell, Science; Cody Head, One Act Play; Dennis Hodgkiss, Social Studies and Current Events; Kristi Hodgkiss, Cross Examination Debate, Lincoln-Douglas Debate, Persuasive Speaking and Informative Speaking; Cheryl LaRue, Journalism and Ready Writing; Yvonne Parson, Accounting and Computer Science; Whitney Shackelford, Number Sense; Neil Stellpflug, Calculator and Math; Pam Tuttle, Prose and Poetry; and Linda Winfrey, Literary Criticism.

Categories included State and Area Marching Band, Team Tennis, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Swimming and Diving, Wrestling, Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, Soccer, Golf, Track and Field, Academics, One Act Play, Softball, and Baseball.
n an email to all North Lamar staff, NLISD Superintendent James A.
