The two and approximately 100 students from other cooperatives in Texas will receive an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. to tour our nation’s capital and many historic sites in and around Washington D.C.  The trip will take place June 12-20.Miranda, a senior, is the daughter of coop members, Michael and Glynese McNabb of Paris.  Trey, a sophomore, is the son of Scott and Tracy Scudder of Powderly.

According to Dena Beason Director of Communications, the tour will originate in Irving, Texas.  Beason says “From there, the group will fly to Washington D.C. where they will meet with approximately 1,200 other students from across the nation.”

Once in Washington, the tour participants will get to see and tour many historic places such as Mount Vernon and the U.S. Capitol, where they will visit with their Texas Congressman and tour the House and Senate chambers.  All tour participants will come together to visit the White House and conclude with an all states dinner and dance.

The student tour in Washington, D.C. will include: taking part of the wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; Kennedy’s Gravesite; Arlington Cemetery; Lincoln Memorial; Vietnam Memorial; World War II Memorial; Peterson House; Smithsonian Museums of American Art, Natural History, American History, and the Air and Space Museum; Union Station, and the Old Post Office Pavilion.  In addition, the students will visit the Pentagon City Mall, Hard Rock Café, take part in the Washington DC Night Driving Tour, and see the Sunset Parade at Iwo Jima. Tour participants will have an opportunity to win other trips while they are in Washington.

Beason says “Lamar Electric Cooperative sponsors two area students on this trip each year.”
