NLHS Leyva Math Standout
Jose Leyva, a senior at North Lamar High School, was recognized for being a standout in the Northeast Texas Algebra Competition organized as part of the Adventures in Mathematics (AIM) event by the Department of Mathematics at Texas A&M University Commerce. AIM is an annual event for high school math teachers and their students and was North Lamar’s first time to attend.
While at AIM, Leyva and others were involved with hands-on activities in math, listened to talks on math careers, and watched planetarium shows. The young participants got to tour the campus of Texas A&M Commerce and experienced lunch in a college cafeteria.
The purpose of AIM is to increase students’ interests in learning Mathematics. For teachers it offers examples, methods, and stories which can be used in the classrooms.
Leyva’s North Lamar math instructor, Michelle Wear, accompanied him to the event. Other NLHS math teachers who attended were Kathy Stewart, Whitney Shackleford, and Neal Stellpflug.
