North Lamar’s Johnson Places 1st Chair at All-State Band
“This is a big deal!” said North Lamar Associate Band Director Jason R. Smith. “That means in class 4A, Conner was ranked as the best tenor sax player in the entire state!”
Johnson began qualifying for all-state back in December with students across the state competing for a spot in the prestigious band.
“It is exciting to see him and his family enjoy this process; it is a long hard road to get here,” said NLHS Band Director Randy Jones from the TMEA conference in San Antonio. “With all the auditions beginning in December at the regional level, then in January at the area audition, and now in February at the final state audition. Conner is now getting to perform with the best musicians in the state.”
From twenty-eight region bands, to five area bands, and now to the Texas All-State Band. In each process, students played in front of their peers and five judges with the judges’ backs facing them for anonymity. Only the top two to three chairs on each instrument advanced to the next level.
Smith said, “We are all proud of the hard work and time Conner has put into this achievement. He’s such a wonderful young man that has set goals and done everything in his power to accomplish them.”
Conner will perform with the 4A Texas All State Band on Saturday, February 15 at 12:30 p.m. in the Lila Cockrell Theater in San Antonio. Composer Johan DeMeij will be conducting the ensemble.
