North Lamar senior places in VFW Patriotic Competition
Jessica Roberts (center), a senior at North Lamar High School, was named third place winner of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriotic Audio Essay Competition. This year’s competition theme, Is Our Constitution Still Relevant?, was open to students in grades 9-12.
The Voice of Democracy has been the VFW’s premier scholarship program since 1947. Each year, more than 50,000 high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives. Students compete by writing and recording a broadcast script on an annual patriotic theme. Prizes and scholarships are awarded at the local, district, state and national level. State winners will compete on March 2-6, 2013, in Washington, D.C.
