Red Cross Lamar County needs more local volunteer participation and will be hosting the first in a series of “Red Cross Boot Camps” on Saturday, February 22, at the Chapter located at 2673 North Main, Suite J. Volunteers will gain specialized disaster training and lunch will be provided for those who sign up in advance.
“Local, trained volunteers, whether in Disaster Serivces, Service to the Armed Forces or Health and Safety, are the lifeblood of our day-to-day operation,” said John Davis, Executive Director of the Lamar County Chapter. “The work we do is fun and extremely rewarding. You can help a family at the curb after a fire, help our local and deployed active military in their time of family crisis, or help train others in life-saving skills such as first aid, CPR and proper AED operation. Regardless of skill level or experience, there is a place for everyone to engage in their community well-being through Red Cross.”
In 2013, Red Cross Lamar County responded to 32 local incidents and helped 91 people recover after their house fire, provided emergency communication and travel services to 44 members of the military and their families, certified 27 with health and safety skills and recently worked with local churches to shelter those without power during the December ice storm.
“Disaster’s come in many shapes and sizes, from single family fires to region-wide tornado outbreaks like the DFW metroplex and Moore, Oklahoma experienced last spring”, said Lori Brookins, Disaster Program Manager for Lamar County. “Local volunteers who are prepared and well-equipped make it possible for our community to stand up a coordinated relief response in a matter of minutes.”
Red Cross Boot Camps are a series of training workshops that provide the working knowledge and skills to ensure our community’s disaster preparedness. The February Boot Camp will provide an overview of Red Cross Disaster Services as well as a hands-on learning experience in post-disaster, damage assessment.
