Runners get down and dirty at Mad Max

“Finish strong!”

“I know it’s hard. It’s supposed to be hard!”

“If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.”

This was the sort of encouragement dozens of runners heard as they braved the mud, dust and water Saturday to participate in the Mad Max Mud Run.

The mud run was the first in what the Lamar County Coalition of Education, Business & Industry hopes will become an annual fundraiser. The 3.5-mile course wound up hills and down along a dusty track through woods near Powderly. Along the way, participants had to navigate 12 physically challenging obstacles that included a climbing wall, crawling through a tube, over hay bales and large wooden spools, a cave crawl, rope swing, tire course, a wobbly three-tier balance beam and a barbed-wire  crawl (barbless). Not to mention lots and lots of mud.
