Need a little summer field trip with your kiddos? Maybe one that takes place in the air conditioning? Pack the kids in the car and head south on 19-24 for 35 miles to the Northeast Texas Children’s Museum in Commerce, Texas. This is a great museum for young kids (I’d say under the age of 10). The permanent exhibits include a dinosaur excavation site, a bubble room, a frontier living room, a grocery store, a pizza parlor, a medical exhibit, a play kitchen, a space shuttle, a train depot, a Veterinarian’s Office, a mock court of law and much, much more.
The Museum also offers a wide variety of special programs and activities. A CSI Police Camp is scheduled July 17-19 from 10 a.m. to noon for ages 10-14. The camp will examine the latest technology that is used in solving crimes. The camp costs $30 for members and $35 for non-members.
Is your daughter ready for the America’s Next Top Model search? Well, on July 19 at 11 a.m. the museum is hosting Fabulously Fashionable, a program for girls in sixth grade and up. Model Elisabeth Leyerle, who has appeared in national print and tv campaigns and runway shows, is a special guest. The girls will learn about skin care, fashion, make-up and runway walk instruction. The girls will take everything they have learned and appear in a fashion show at 2:30 p.m.
The whole family will enjoy the special Family Night on Friday, July 26,which is part of the museum’s Community Week. The museum will be open from 5-7 p.m. and there will be a special presentation by the “Critter Man.” D Magazine rated The Critter Man as one of the best children’s entertainers in the Metroplex.
Other upcoming theme weeks include Dino Week, July 30-Aug. 2, and Science Week, Aug. 6-9. For more information on special programming, call 903.886.6055.
The Northeast Texas Children’s Museum is located at 2501 Hwy 24 in Commerce, Texas and is open Tuesday- Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The museum also offers birthday parties.
