Infant receives lifesaving heart transplant, Softball tournament to help with the costs

Infant Aubrie Miller began fighting for her life before she was even born. In February, during a routine ultrasound, her mother learned Aubrie suffered from dilated cardiomyopathy.

After she was born on March 14, little Aubrie was immediately transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas for treatment and care. Doctors said a heart transplant was critical to her survival. Thankfully, she received her lifesaving transplant on May 22 and is recovering well.

During this frightening time, the Millers have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from family, friends and the community. They hope Aubrie’s story brings awareness about the urgent need for organ donors so many more lives can be saved. More than anything, they want to bring their little girl home happy and healthy as soon as possible. But they still need your help.

The average heart transplant costs nearly $1 million. Although her health insurance will cover the transplant itself, her family will still face expenses for follow-up care and daily anti-rejection medications for the rest of her life. Post-transplant medications can be very costly, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself.

The Millers will incur substantial expenses after when they travel back for follow-up care and doctors’ appointments, as they live 150 miles from the hospital.

To overcome these financial challenges, the Millers turned to the National Foundation for Transplants (NFT) for assistance. NFT is a nonprofit organization that helps transplant patients raise funds to pay for medical expenses.

“I am beyond thrilled that this precious baby received a second chance at life,” said Kay Horne, NFT fundraising consultant. “But I know she still has a long way to go. Everyone at NFT is dedicated to helping Aubrie’s family raise the necessary funds so they can focus on her health without constantly worrying about the mounting medical expenses.”

Saturday, June 23 a softball tournament fundraiser will be held in Aubrie’s honor at the Paris Sports Complex, 2025 S. Collegiate Dr. Games will begin at 6 p.m., and teams can register for $200.
