Close to a hundred people gathered at Love Civic Center on Saturday in the name of Connecting for a Cause.
The event raises money for breast cancer, which affects nearly everyone, said Rev. Kathy French of Connections, which sponsors the event.
“We have a member of our congregation who has been battling breast cancer for five years now,” she said. “There are so many who are affected by this – a friend, a wife, a sister.”
This marked the third year for Connections to raise money for breast cancer. The last couple of years, the event was primarily a “pink hair party.” This year introduced the Pink 5K run/walk. Participants paid $20 to register. About 80 preregistered, and more showed up later. Connecting for a Cause also included T-shirts, bling for the T-shirts courtesy of Paris Glam, pink hair extensions and free classes courtesy of CrossFit. The funds raised go to Susan G. Komen.
“We’re trying to keep costs low so all the money can go to them,” French said.
As an extension ministry of First United Methodist Church, Connection’s mission is to connect with God, others and the community, French said. The breast cancer event is one way to do that.
“We choose to do things we are passionate about to help the community in the name of Christ,” she said. “We can’t heal like he did, but we can continue the mission.”
