Country Music Hall of Fame’s Charley Pride will be performing at the Choctaw Casino in Grant, Oklahoma, this weekend on Saturday, January 5, 2013, starting at 8 p.m, in the Grant Event Center.
Pride is one of those names who have stood the test of time in the world of country music. Best known for his successful crossover hit Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’, Charley Pride has garnered 39 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, and has sold over 70 million albums worldwide.
Born to poor sharecroppers in Sledge, Mississippi, the young Charley Pride started his music career, unofficially, as a baseball player in the Negro American League’s Memphis Red Sox, singing and playing guitar on the team bus between baseball games.
After a tryout with the New York Mets, Pride returned to his Montana home via Nashville to pursue his love of music. It was there in Nashville where Pride met producer Jack Clement, who encouraged Pride to quickly record a two song demo in just two hours.
That demo, which featured The Snakes Crawl at Night and Atlantic Coastal Line, eventually landed in the hands of RCA Records executive Chet Adkins two months later, who immediately signed him to the label. In 1969, Pride landed his first No. 1 single with All I Have to Offer You (Is Me).
Dozens of Pride’s chart toppers are now considered modern classics. 1971′s Kiss An Angel Good Mornin’ went on to be Pride’s first crossover hit on the Billboard pop charts, and helped the singer earn Entertainer of the Year at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971 and Top Male Vocalist at the CMAs in 1971 and 1972.
Over the past thirty years, Pride has remained one of the Top 20 best-selling country artists of all-time. In 1993, Pride became the first African-American to join the Grand Ole Opry in its 70 year history after a long-standing invitation 26 years after he first performed as a guest.
Pride received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and received the highest country music award in 2000 as he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
