Paris Texas’ music scene is growing at a rapid pace. Due mostly to the fact that several of the Paris musicians have banded together to create an alliance of performing talents.
Most of the musicians in the bands around the area also have the ability to perform on their own and write their own songs. This fact allows for many acoustic, songwriter showcase opportunities, and now the venue has been decided upon in which to do so at — at least for September.
Folkin’ Free Tuesdays at the Depot was started by Alex Addy, frontman of local band, the Tambourine Machine. (Click the names to visit the bands’ Facebook page.) The idea is to feature the best singer/songwriters and acoustic guitar performers that Paris Texas has to offer.
To start the lineup for the month of September is the drummer of local band, Pearl Street Riot, Rodney Key. Key is a master of the drums, but is even better on the 6-string. He has major blues influences and his music could take you straight back to the ‘harp-blowin’ days of the Southern Delta blues. His show is September 4, which is also his birthday.
To follow Mr. Key is local songwriting legend, Michael O’Neal, with special guest Jonathan Jeter of popular Commerce band, Jonathan Jeter & the Revelators on September 11. Michael O’Neal was awarded by the Texas Music Association for his 2011 album release of “Learning As I Go” — earning the Distinguished Artist Award. Both musicians are exceptional songwriters and solo performers.
Then, on September 18, the Draggin’ Man will bring his funk, folk and blues fusion style to the Depot. A guitar player by trade — playing with many different bands and touring worldwide — the Draggin’ Man has trademarked a signature songwriting style with a very percussive, rhythmic approach to acoustic guitar playing.
To end the month, on September 25, mastermind behind the whole project, Alex Addy will perform with special guest Max Jones. This duo has performed around town and the region more times than you could count. Their styles are similar, yet their songwriting sets them apart, making them a perfect performing team. Both have mastered their style with great vocal range and both have a way of attracting the listener to them.
Help the Paris music scene grow by coming and supporting these talented musicians. Nothing is better than a free show and that’s what you’ve got with Folkin’ Free Tuesdays at the Depot — 1264 S. Main Street, Paris, Texas.
