For those that didn’t know, Paris has its very own Brew Club, known cleverly as Et Tu Brewte. Brewing homemade beer from scratch, Et Tu Brewte is a young group — created by local Parisians & business owners — that is always asking for new members.
Being a community organization, they meet once a month, usually at a member’s home, on the first Sunday, unless it’s a holiday weekend, as in July and September. The organization is very laid back with no officers or monthly dues.
At each monthly meeting, 5-10 gallons of original-recipe home brew are made from ingredients that all the members chip in to buy. They share ideas and recipes, learn about grains, barley, and hops, and discuss temperatures, times and sugars.
“While we’re brewing the new batch, we sample the beer that was brewed at the previous meeting,” stated member John Ryan. “Some people bring appetizers to share, but this is not a requirement.”
New members are the heart & soul of the organization and play the most active part in the brewing process. A recipe that will be used and the type of beer are voted upon by members at meetings, while everyone helps with the purchase of materials for brewing instead of paying monthly dues.
During this month the brew club had their 1st Annual Summer Wheat Brew-off at Bois d’ Arc Restaurant. Many locals attended the event to try all the different home brew beers available for tasting, while Alex Addy & the Tambourine Machine provided some live acoustic entertainment.
Several judges – local business owners & non-competing members – graded the different entries with a point system, grading everything from taste to color to the foam head. Josh Weger took the top prize of this first Brew-off with his tasty wheat recipe.
If you’d like to learn more about the organization, just visit their website at www.ettubrewte.org. The site contains photos, an event calendar, the brewing process, sponsors, links, and so on. They have a mass email list that you can also join very easily on their website.
To become a member of the group, just attend one of their monthly meetings, they’d gladly welcome you. One is coming up next month on September 9. If you join the email list, all the details of the meetings will be sent out, with instructions to the location.
Come out and join Et Tu Brewte and learn how to make your very own beer from scratch.
