Renee Elmore

Renee Elmore, Principal at Justiss Elementary in Paris ISD, was named District 8 TEPSAN of the Year for the Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association (TEPSA).

Members from the 20 TEPSA Districts across the state annually recognize a colleague for their outstanding service to the association.

“These TEPSANs are tireless champions for Texas students and educators,” said TEPSA Executive Director Sandi Borden.

TEPSA named Kristi Callihan of Justiss Elementary in Paris ISD, District 8 Assistant Principal of the Year. The peer-based award recognizes assistant principals for their commitment to student learning as evidenced by exceptional school leadership.

“These administrators are committed to ensuring their students and teachers succeed,” said TEPSA Executive Director Sandi Borden.

Honorees will be recognized at the TEPSA Awards Celebration Reception Wednesday, June 12, at the Austin Renaissance Hotel.

TEPSA, whose hallmark is educational leaders learning with and from each other, has served Texas PreK-8 school leaders since 1917. Member owned and member governed, TEPSA has more than 5,800 members who direct the activities of more than 2.5 million PreK-8 school children.

Paris ISD names Teachers of the Year

Kristi Berry - Elementary Teacher of the Year

Kristi Berry – Elementary Teacher of the Year

Kristi Berry was named Elementary Teacher of the Year and Bennie Sisson was named Secondary Teacher of the Year for the Paris Independent School District at the staff recognition reception, an annual event recognizing teaching excellence, as well as honoring employees for their years of service.

Both will represent Paris ISD as its nominees in the 2014 Region VIII Education Service Center Teacher of the Year competition.

Berry is a 1984 graduate of Paris Junior College and a 1987 graduate of Texas A&M-Commerce with a Bachelor of Science in Education.

She taught fourth grade at Justiss for 25 years and transferred to second grade this year as a math, science and social studies teacher.  During these years, she served as a mentor to six student teachers.

Kristi extends her loving nature by rescuing and caring for homeless animals outside of school.

Kristi states, “I believe a ‘stand out’ teacher must create a positive learning environment in the classroom, and it must start weeks before students arrive for the beginning of the school year.  If students see the teacher excited about teaching, they become excited about learning.  Building relationships with students should be the #1 priority as each new school year begins.  This is necessary for maximum learning to take place.”

Bennie Sission - Secondary Teacher of the Year

Bennie Sission – Secondary Teacher of the Year

Sission graduated “with distinction” from East Texas State University-Commerce in 1995, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Using her English/History dual major, Bennie has taught English as a Second Language (ESL) on five Paris ISD campuses.  Currently she teaches grades 7-12 ESL, serves on the LPAC Committee, and is a TELPAS supplemental trainer.

In 2004 and 2008, she served as the Delta County Precinct Judge.

“High expectations should be set for all students.  I believe in the saying, ‘My teacher said I could, so I did’…My mission is two-fold: (1) to ensure that each English Language learner develops high levels of English proficiency, while mastering challenging content-area standards of learning, and (2) to prepare the learner for what might lie ahead in his/her life.”

Bowman out; search begins for a new Paris Wildcats head football coach and AD

Barry Bowman is shown on the north end of Wildcat Stadium before leading Paris High School’s fall football drills during his first season here in 2011. He confirmed Monday that he had been offered the job as defensive coordinator at Longview Pine Tree High School, where he once was an assistant coach. Later he won three straight championships as head coach and athletic director at Daingerfield. (eParisExtra.com photo by Charles Richards)

Barry Bowman, head football coach and athletic director of Paris High School, made it official on Tuesday, officially tendering his resignation to the Paris ISD board of trustees.

He had confirmed on Monday that he had been offered the job of defensive coordinator at Pine Tree High School in Longview, and that became official when the Pine Tree school board met at noon Tuesday.

Paris superintendent Paul Jones announced that the search will now begin for a new head coach and athletic director for the Paris Independent School District.

Jones said he wants to move quickly because Bowman’s resignation came later in the school year than is usually the case for a head coach. Coaches usually make their move — if they are going to — by March, he said.

“We are now accepting applications and will up until May 10.  We are hoping to have the candidate’s name by our next board meeting on May 13,” Jones said. “I really don’t know if accepting applications until May 10 will give us enough time to get a candidate by our next board meeting, but that is our goal.”

The superintendent added: “We would really like to get the new coach in place before the end of the school year to meet all the athletes and students.”

Bowman carved out a 44-3 record and won three straight state titles at Daingerfield. The Tigers were 15-1 in 2008, winning the Class 2A Division II state title game with a 26-8 victory over Cisco. In 2009, Daingerfield also went 15-1 and knocked off Bushland 62-14 to win the Division II state championship.

In 2010, Daingerfield finished 14-1 and captured the Division I title with a 33-27 win over Cameron Yoe.

Bowman left Daingerfield to be head football coach and athletic director at Paris, where he compiled a 17-6 record in two seasons. His Paris teams were 10-0 in District 13-3A play, winning back-to-back district championships.

Bowman, who was an assistant coach at Pine Tree and head coach at Bullard before taking the Daingerfield job, has a career record of 77-24.

Paris was coming off a 4-6 season before Bowman arrived in 2011, and the 2011 team went 9-2 — the most wins for a Wildcat team since the 1988 team went 13-3 and won a 4A state title under Allen Wilson.

The Wildcats were 8-4 a year ago.

Bowman and Pine Tree head coach and athletic director Derek Fitzhenry were college teammates at Louisiana Tech.

“Barry is an outstanding coach and a great addition to our program,” Fitzhenry said. “We have known each other for 28 years. We have the same philosophy when it comes to defense, and Barry has ties and family here that will keep him here and provide stability for our program.”

When Bowman was selected out of dozens of applicants for the Paris job two years ago, he said it was his last coaching stop. Paris was where he wanted to finish his career, he said. He told longtime East Texas sportscaster David Smoak of www.smoaky.com on Monday that he and his wife need to be closer to their parents.

“My wife and I are moving close to all of my family and my parents haven’t been in good health and I hardly see them.  Paris has been great for us, but this is about being closer to family and my wife’s parents and mine. We are excited about being closer to home while also working with Coach Fitzhenry at Pine Tree,” Bowman told Smoak.

The fathers of Bowman and his wife are longtime coaches, now retired, in the Longview area.

Wildcat Booster Club Athletic Awards Program on May 20

Dear Parents and Wildcat Fans,

PISD_SignThe Paris Wildcat Athletic Booster Club is sponsoring an Athletic Awards Program on May 20, 2013 at the Paris Junior High School Auditorium beginning at 7:00 PM, with a reception to follow in the cafeteria.

We cordially invite you to come and participate in this annual event with us to celebrate the achievements of our athletes. We believe that our athletes deserve special recognition for their hard work and achievements this year, and have come up with an alternative plan to the banquet which will help cut costs tremendously while giving our athletes the recognition they have earned and deserve.

This program will be similar to what others groups, such as National Honor Society, are doing for their students. The athletes are still asked to dress in nicer attire while making sure it follows Paris ISD dress code.

The WCABC was established to support ALL athletic programs at Paris High School, both boys and girls, from freshman to varsity levels. There is no cost to attend this year’s awards program, so please join us in celebrating the accomplishments of all of our Paris High School athletes.

Sincerely,

– PISD
