The Rotary Clubs of Paris and Greater Paris recently awarded $1,000 scholarships to 15 area high school students attending Paris Junior College in the 2014-2015 school year.
The scholarships are designed to cover educational expenses such as tuition, fees, books, and room and board and are split between the fall and spring semesters.
Rotary Scholarship Committee member Connie Stauter spoke to the students about their responsibilities at a meeting at PJC. She explained that leadership is expected from them, and that they are required to help with the Rotary Fireworks on July 3, attend one Rotary meeting a semester, attend PJC Student Government Association meetings and assist with the group’s activities, and maintain a cumulative 3.0 grade point average.
Fellow scholarship committee members also attended. Rotary Club of Paris President Sherrie White, Greater Paris Rotary Club President Susan Chapman, scholarship committee member Carl Lucas and scholarship committee chair Vicki Ballard joined Stauter to let the students know more information about the program, expectations, and their meeting schedules.
PJC Director of Student Life Kenneth Webb also addressed the students, telling them of activities they would be involved with as part of SGA. “You are our future leaders,” Webb said, “you will determine what happens so you need to be involved.”
This year’s awardees include: Chisum High School: Arron Newman and Tessla Rickman. North Lamar High School: Balee Brown, Angelina Dobbs, Rachel Freeman and Yuliana Morales. Paris High School: Megan Kindle, Kimberly Miranda, Alfredo Gonzalez, Caitlin Nance, Zakkiyal Threadgill and Kendall Vogt. Prairiland: Hailey Ray, Lauren Jeans and Tyler Collier.
