Registration for two session of Kids’ College at Paris Junior College opened last week. This year the traditional Kids’ College lineup for kindergarten through second grade, and third to fifth grade, is joined by a Junior Law Enforcement Academy for sixth through ninth graders. T
wo sessions will be offered for each. Kids’ College sessions are June 23-26, 2014, and July 28-31, 2014, at varying times dependent on classes. The Junior Law Enforcement Academy will be held June 23-27, 2014, and July 28-Aug. 1, 2014, both from 1-5 p.m.
“Last year, CSI: Paris was a great success during Kids College and through the partnership of the Paris Police Department, Lamar County Sheriff Department, Paris Fire Department and Paris Junior College, the Paris Junior Law Enforcement Academy was created,” said PJC continuing education director Rita Pringle. “Students will receive a more in-depth look at the criminal justice system and how to plan a career path in criminal justice.”
All Kids’ College classes are offered in both sessions, and will be located at the Bobby R. Walters Workforce Training Center. Parents should drop children off at 8 a.m. and pick them up between 4:30 and 5 p.m. The classes are staggered from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. with a choice of three in each time slot. At 3:30 p.m. there is a one-hour group activity.
Both age tracks in the Kids’ College include CSI: Paris, Kidz Home Alone, Kitchen Creations, Great Games for All Ages, Martial Arts, Theater Workshop Part 1 and 2, Fun with Spanish, Give Me a “C” Give Me a “HEER,” Robotics, Sign Language, Fun with 4-H, Foto Magic and Write off the Bat.
Offered only for the kindergarten through second grade is Bookworms. Specific to the third through fifth grade track is I Wanna Do a Picture Like That.
The Junior Law Enforcement Academy will visit various locations including the Paris Police Department, Lamar County Sheriff’s Department/Jail, Lamar County Courthouse, Paris Fire Department Station I, and the PJC Workforce Training Center.
A graduation ceremony will be held for the academy at 4 p.m. on the Friday of each session. “Attending Kids’ College is a great way to keep students active and busy this summer,” said Pringle. “Students will learn through fun and engaging activities that will appeal to a lot of different interests.”
