Paris Junior College’s Continuing Education Department is offering a wide variety of classes in May. Courses are in the Bobby R. Walters Workforce Training Center, unless noted otherwise. The Initial Basic Life Support class on lifesaving skills for respiratory and cardiac emergencies will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3. The course repeats at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16. The American Heart Association certifies the class.
The OSHA Confined Space course covers OSHA and company requirements for entering confined space areas. Includes introduction, entry permits, equipment review as a field exercise, and attaining authorization for monitoring and entering. The class is offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday and Friday, May 1-2.
A Nurse Aide class will be offered from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, May 5-June 10. The class offers preparation for entry level nursing assistants.
The Driver’s Education class, approved by the Texas Department of Public Safety, meets from 4 to 6 p.m., Monday through Thursday, May 5-30.
Professional Truck Driving I is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 5-16. This class offers hands-on skill and development and instruction coordinated with the Department of Transportation.
Basic Life Support Recertification for CPR certified cardholders will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6. The American Heart Association certifies the class.
Microsoft Word Intermediate will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 6-15. Students will learn advanced formatting techniques to enhance documents.
Fitness Swim will meet 6-7 a.m., Tuesdays and Fridays, May 9-July 1, at the PJC Recreation Center. The course will improve swimming efficiency and endurance through drills, sprints, timed and distance swims.
The Kids Hurt Too Seminar will be offered from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, May 10. This seminar is designed to help parents understand the needs of their children throughout the process of divorce.
Welcome to the World of Computers will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. each Monday and Wednesday, May 12-21. This class is designed for the person that has very limited, if any, computer training. Preparing for state board exams is the purpose of the NCLEX-PN Review, an accelerated learning course offered from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, May 12-13. Students learn what to expect from computer testing, how to study and use clinical reasoning skills.
The NCLEX-RN Review is an accelerated learning course designed to help students prepare for state board exams. This is for anyone with an RN, ASN, BSN or MSN. The course is held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday through Friday, May 14-16. Medication Aide Update will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 16. The course content fulfills Texas Department of Health specifications on annual renewal requirements for certified medication aides. Medication aides should take this course one month before their certification card expires.
Professional Truck Driving II is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, May 19-30. Basic and advanced skills drill and safe operating practices for shifting and backing are included in this class. A Microsoft Excel Intermediate class will meet from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, May 20-29. Training covers advanced techniques to analyze data, enhance charts and automate worksheet tasks.
The Heartsaver First Aid CPR & AED (automated external defibrillator) class targets day care workers, church nursery staff and parents wanting to adopt. The course teaches basic first aid and CPR/AED procedures, including first aid skills recommended by the Occupational Safety and Health Agency, to those with a duty to respond to a first aid or cardiac emergency. It will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 24.
