School bus drivers and transportation department employees will wear special t-shirts to promote National School Bus Safety Week Oct. 15-19. According to Paris ISD Transportation Coordinator Tony Gunn, “During School Bus Safety Week, we are asking for cooperation from our citizens in helping us to maintain or even improve our safety record. Our school bus drivers are doing a great job, but they need the cooperation of other motorists.”
One of the most common driver complaints, according to Gunn is that other motorists frequently violate the school bus stop law. “Motorists are required to stop for stopped school buses that are displaying flashing red lights and a stop arm,” said Gunn. “Sometimes the drivers are not fully alert and pass a stopped school bus. This is a very dangerous situation for the children, especially the younger ones who may not watch traffic as closely as they should.”
