Three members of North Lamar’s Speech and Debate team have advanced to nationals after competing at the UIL District of the National Forensic League’s national qualifying tournament this past weekend.
Ryan Conner placed first and Jared Chenevey took second in International Extemporaneous Speaking which focuses on topics about foreign countries. Seth Gurley secured the first place spot in U.S. Extemporaneous Speaking which concentrates on topics about the United States. Conner also placed second in Congressional Debate. All three will compete at the National Speech and Debate Tournament in Kansas City, Kansas June 13-20.
Others who placed at the district meet were Kelsey Preston – 3rd in Humorous Interpretation (alternate to nationals); the team of Kelsey Preston and Kay Edwards – 6th in Policy Debate; MacKenzie Beckmon – 9th in Lincoln-Douglas Debate; Seth Gurley – 8th in Congressional Debate; and Jared Chenevey – 9th in Congressional Debate. Advancing to the final rounds of Congress were Kay Edwards, Kelsey Preston, and Jake Chollet.
