NLEF raises $37K for scholarships

This year’s North Lamar Education Foundation Tailgate Party raised $37,172 for scholarships for NLHS graduates.

The event was held Saturday at Love Civic Center. It followed a traditional tailgating party, with college games playing on big screens at either end of the center while alumni and fans dressed in their school colors and served food from tents set up around the floor. Attendees got to vote for their favorite college or university by placing $1 bills in containers at each tailgate. For the second year in a row, the votes went to the Texas A&M tailgaters, so a North Lamar High School graduate will receive a $500 Traveling Tailgate scholarship to Texas A&M University.

In all, ticket sales, sponsorships, votes, and a card game brought in $17,741. James Dawson won the $500 card game drawing, where cards were purchased for $20 each at the beginning of the night, and card holders were eliminated until the last one won.

Silent and live auctions brought in a total of $19,431. Winning bidders included Jon Milstead from Taco Casa for a condo stay in Driggs, Idaho; Johnna McNeal for Cowboys tickets; the Buster family for a North Lamar street sign; Melissa LaVoy, who acquired a Dirk Nowitzki-autographed basketball; and Jason Smith with a turkey hunt. Others included Peoples Bank, Dawson and Billy Copeland.
