Kayla Prihoda and Alecia Beshirs are spending seven days in Orlando this summer, but it’s not for the rides at the Magic Kingdom. These two North Lamar juniors are the reigning state champions in Digital Design and Promotion, and are going to Florida seeking the Nation title when the compete at the National Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Convention.
Kayla and Alecia were tasked with creating and presenting a new logo for the FBLA taking into consideration the organization’s mission statement and progressive image. The pair began working on the design in January where they brainstormed the description of the organization and symbols they wished to convey in their logo design.
“Figuring out where to start was the hardest part,” says Alecia. Alecia and Kayla decided on an arrow design in American flag stars and bars. “This was to signify leadership and forward progress”, she added. They then created a tagline. “Moving for is vital to FBLA” says Kayla, “so we went with Forward with the Future.”
The combination worked, and as one of six finalist teams, they went to San Antonio to formally present their logo design to a panel of judges. As they stood on the stage listening to the sixth, fifth and fourth place teams being announced, they started to get excited. “Whenever they called the 3rd place team, I knew we were going to Nationals!” exclaimed Kayla. Kayla and Alecia were ultimately announced as the state champions.
Originally Kayla joined FBLA, an extracurricular club offered at North Lamar High School, “because they offered free donuts”, she said smiling. Once in the club though, she paired up with Alecia because they both had an early sense of how they wanted to approach the competition. Kayla, a student with a strong journalism, art and theater background matched up nicely with Alecia’s yearbook staff experience. Both have spent the year in Mrs. Jen Jones’s Digital and Interactive Media class becoming Adobe Photo Shop Certified, an asset which positioned them to win state.
The design skills they have learned “allow you to be creative in your own way,” say Kayla, who is now interested in video design and production. Alecia wants to also make use of her new design skills. “It lets you take something simple and make it your own.”
Because of their hard work and achievement, both Alecia and Kayla will each get to be “Designer for a Day” in early May where they will spend a day at eParisTexas.com as interns working with graphic designers on web media projects for clients and for the eParis Extra!
Best of luck in Orlando to two Future Business Leaders, Alecia Beshirs and Kayla Prihoda.
