During a recent conference in Austin, area dyslexia therapists and teachers were invited by HBO to attend a private screening of the documentary The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia. Executive producer, Karen Pritzker, introduced the film and offered the audience insight into the film’s creation, prior to the viewing. Following the screening, Pritzker participated in a question and answer session with the audience. She noted that Texas was chosen as the site for this premiere due to the strong dyslexia programs and laws that recognize and support dyslexic students, which are not prevalent in most other states.
The Big Picture: Rethinking Dyslexia is about a dyslexic high school student who pursues admission to a competitive college – a challenge for a boy who didn’t learn to read until the 4th grade. Directed by James Redford and featuring additional accounts of the dyslexic experience from children, experts and iconic leaders, the film helps us understand that dyslexia is as much a gift as it is a challenge.
Dyslexic therapists in attendance at the premier from Lamar County were Sheena Sikes, Chisum ISD; Sally Bruce and Tracy Shoemake, Paris ISD; Michelle Easton, Tammy Klinkerman, Debbie Wood, and Christie Welch, North Lamar, ISD.
The documentary will air to the public on HBO Monday, October 29th at 9:00 p.m. central time. The attendees would like to encourage parents and educators, who want to learn more about dyslexia and supporting students with dyslexia, to view this film, if they have access to this channel.
