CARTHAGE, Texas — Maeghan Scott burned the nets for 25 points Wednesday night, hitting six 3-pointers to lead the Lady Dragons of Paris Junior College to a 90-85 overtime victory over Panola College.

Scott led all scorers with 25 points, but Shannon DeFoe added 21 points and Chy Cunningham 20 as Paris improved to 16-13 overall and 10-7 in conference.

Kierra Campbell scored 16 points, Shanika Baker 14 points, and Kiara Freeman 11 points for Panola, which came close to picking up only its second conference victory. The Fillies fell to 8-21 overall and 1-16 in Region XIV play

Prospects for a Paris looked glum with less than 10 minutes to go. Panola had turned a 38-37 halftime lead into a 65-52 advantage with under 10 minutes let in the game.

But when the 3-pointers start dropping, the points go up on the scoreboard in a hurry.  In a couple of minutes, Paris went from down 71-58 to 71-61 …. to 71-64 … to 71-67 … to 73-70.

Chy Cunningham then drove the baseline for a basket, and with 1:20 to play it was 73-72, and DeFoe’s free throw tied the game 73-73 with 44 seconds left in regulation.

Freeman drove for a basket with 22.5 seconds remaining and was fouled. She could have given Panola a three-point lead, but she missed the free throw. Paris grabbed the rebound, and Shanice Vaughan drove for the tying score with 4.5 seconds left in regulation.

Paris then owned the five-minute overtime, scoring nine points in the first two minutes for an 84-75 lead. Panola got within three points with under 30 seconds to play, but Paris kept the Fillies at bay by making free throws.

Paris’ bugaboo for the first three-quarters of the game was free throws, which is usually the Lady Dragons’ strong point. Paris was 12-of-29 (41.3 percent) from the line.

“I was disappointed in our free throw shooting. I told our kids in the locker room, I think sometimes free throw shooting is a lack of focus,” Lady Dragons’ head coach Michael Madrid said.

“But we did a great job fighting through that tough stretch, and we were able to come out at the end.”

Paris moved back into fourth place as a result of Jacksonville’s loss to Tyler. But fourth and fifth are basically the same, since the No.4 and 5 seeds meet in the first round of the Region XIV tournament at UT-Tyler next Wednesday.

The Lady Dragons’ last home game is Saturday at 4 p.m. against Blinn College, which is tied with Tyler for second in Region XIV women’s play, three games behind two-time defending women’s champion Trinity Valley.

“We’re going to honor our sophomores on Saturday. We hope to get some folks out to watch them play and cheer them on,” Madrid said.

In this week’s final women’s Top 25 poll of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Trinity Valley is No. 1, Tyler is No. 11 and Blinn is No. 12.
