Paris Junior College men’s basketball team has broken into the national junior college basketball rankings for the first time this season, making the list at No. 29.

The Dragons, who have won eight straight games to get to 16-4 on the season and 9-1 in conference, caused some raised eyebrows when they knocked off No. 2-ranked Kilgore last Wednesday, 68-66, in Kilgore for PJC Coach Chuck Taylor’s 100th career victory as a head coach.

Four close losses to ranked teams — including three in which the Dragons led late in the game — kept PJC out of the top 30, but at 16-4 they look a lot better on paper than they did at 8-4.

Kilgore (now 17-2, 8-2) fell this week to No. 10, one spot behind No. 9 Trinity Valley (19-2, 9-1), a team that Kilgore beat 74-70 the previous Wednesday.

Tonight, Paris will attempt to knock off Trinity Valley, in a 7:30 p.m. game in Athens that will give the winner undisputed first place in the Region 14 standings.

For the Dragons, it’s the sixth of 12 home-and-away games against the six other Region 14-North Zone teams. The Dragons went 5-1 against the seven teams in the South Zone, with a make-up game at home still to be played next month against San Jacinto College. Paris wraps up first-half play at the Hunt Center at 6 p.m. Saturday against Panola (11-11, 4-7)
