Dragons defeat Tyler 78-72 for eighth straight victory

PJC Dragon FireHUNT CENTER, PJC Campus – Delvin Dickerson scored 15 points and Trevon Seymore 13 points as Paris Junior College defeated Tyler Junior College 78-72 on Saturday for their eighth straight victory, keeping them atop the Region XIV basketball standings.

Paris led 37-23 at the half — most of the damage coming on a 12-3 run that took the Dragons from a 5-2 deficit to a 14-8 lead, and a 9-0 run over the last 1:24 of the half. Dickerson’s 3-pointer at the buzzer put an exclamation mark on the run for a 37-23 lead.

The Dragons led by 13 points at 72-59 with 45 seconds to play, but TJC’s Apaches scored 13 points in the last 38 seconds of the game, including two 3-pointers from Japhet Davis-Sophus and one from Vamba Donzo, Tyler got as close as 76-72 at 0:02 before Joe Haynes made two free throws for the final score.

Tyler’s Todd Eaglin led all scorers with 21 points, including 8-of-10 free throws. Faith Pope added 12 points. Davis-Sophus and Donzo each made three 3-pointers in the second half and finished with 9 points apiece.

With the win, Coach Chuck Taylor‘s Paris squad improved to 16-4 for the season and 9-1 in conference. Tyler dropped to 10-8 and 3-7.

The next game for Paris is against Trinity Valley at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Athens. The two teams are tied not only for the lead in Region XIV’s seven-team North Zone but of the entire league.
