Trick or Treat

I think one of the best things about having kids, is dressing them up for Halloween. I just love little kids in costumes!  Halloween is this Monday and there are several things going on around town.  First, bring your little ones to story-time at the library at 2pm for some Halloween books, songs and treats.  Before or after, visit the Roadhouse Diner on Main Street, they will be giving a free pancake to all kids on Monday.  There will also be trick or treating downtown on Monday from 5pm -8pm and also at the Paris Town Centre (formerly known as Mirabeau).

Whether you go trick or treating downtown, in your local neighborhood or at one of numerous church-sponsored Halloween festivals, there are several tips for keeping your kiddos safe on Halloween.*

  1. Practice Fire Safety – Look for flame-resistant labels when buying costumes, masks, beards, and wigs. To avoid any contact with fire, don’t dress your little goblin in any costume with billowing material such as baggy sleeves or flowing skirts. Of course, even if you’ve dressed your child in the safest costume, make sure he stays clear of pumpkins that contain lighted candles. These are sometimes a magnet for curious children, who may try to touch, pick up, or peek inside them.
  2. Keeping toddlers on their feet – Tots tend to trip and fall under the best of conditions, so you’ll have to take extra precautions on Halloween night. When choosing or creating a costume, make sure it’s short enough to let her navigate easily.
  3. Stay visible -Even if you plan to keep your little one in hand on Halloween night, reflector tape is not a bad idea if you’ll be out after dark. A flashlight may also come in handy for negotiating long walkways or dimly lit doorways.
  4. Avoid Pointed props- Replace plastic swords and sharp-pointed princess crowns with softer versions. Try sewing a stuffed sword for your little gladiator, or make a paper or plastic foam crown for your toddling princess. You can make police badges out of felt to replace the sharper plastic store-bought versions. Make a magic wand by attaching streaming, curling ribbon or glitter-decorated tulle instead of pointed plastic stars.
  5. Use makeup instead of a mask – Instead of a mask, which can make it hard for a child to both see and breathe, paint your child’s face with nontoxic makeup.
  6. 6.      Careful with the Candy - The CPSC recommends that parents scrutinize treats for evidence of tampering before letting children eat them. Carefully examine each wrapper to make sure there’s no sign of its having been opened. Accept homemade treats only from neighbors you know, and cut up fruit before serving it. Keep in mind, too, that many treats are not appropriate for babies or toddlers. Hard candies, nuts, popcorn, lollipops, raisins, and anything you can’t cut into small pieces are all choking hazards. Plan on handing out toddler-safe candy as well such as candy bars.
  7. 7.      Decorations - Whether in your own home or a neighbor’s, be on the lookout for holiday decorations that can pose hazards. Your child will want to explore cackling witches, lighted coffins — anything new and unusual. Try to keep decorations with small, loose parts out of her reach. Also, if you have a teething baby, be mindful of any soft plastic items that might be tempting to chew on. Be especially wary of oil lamps – ingesting the oil can be fatal.

Linus: [to Sally as she walks away with everyone else]  “Hey, aren’t you going to wait and greet the Great Pumpkin? Huh? It won’t be long now. If the Great Pumpkin comes, I’ll still put in a good word for you!
[realizes what he just said]
Linus:  “Good grief! I said “if”! I meant, “when” he comes! I’m doomed. One little slip like that could cause the Great Pumpkin to pass you by. Oh, Great Pumpkin, where are you?”

Happy Halloween!

How Many Pennies Does It Take to Fill a Milk Jug

Bailey Intermediate fourth graders have just completed a penny drive to raise funds for the purchase of a granite paver to honor a Lamar County pioneer, Robert M. Cravens, who participated in the Battle of San Jacinto.

With a goal of raising $300 for the paver, twelve gallon milk jugs weighing over 300 pounds were filled by the students.  Guessing the closest to how many pennies it takes to fill one jug was LaDonna Trull (left) with Bailey counselor Randy Dollins (right).

Both Jr. and Sr. Chisum Stangs Football teams have worked hard all season. They are both young teams with over half of the players being first year players who have had to learn all the plays, rules, and conditions of playing football. The football league as well as their coaches are very proud of all their efforts, sacrifices, and dedication to the sport.
