The Paris Police Department reported a little slower paced weekend than usual, although answering 290 calls and arresting 24 people from Friday to Sunday at midnight, according to Paris Police Cheif, Bob Hudley.
Three different people were arrested on charges involving resisting arrest or assaulting a peace officer.
The first involved a reported shoplifter at a store in the 3500 block of Lamar Avenue. Officers located the reported shoplifter in the parking lot and detained him while investigating the theft. While attempting to place handcuffs on the suspect, he slapped the officers arm, freeing himself to flee.
The officer pursued the suspect across the southeast Loop, where he was aided by a Reno police officer who had heard his request for assistance. The Reno officer was able to take the suspect into custody behind an office building in the 5000 block of the southeast Loop. Over $350 worth of stolen property was recovered from the perpetrator. Damien Garcia, 17, of Paris, was charged with evading arrest, assaulting a peace officer and theft over $50.
In another incident, officers were dispatched to a criminal trespassing call at an apartment complex in the 2300 block of Lamar Avenue. Information provided by the caller, who stated that she was in a locked bathroom inside the residence, gave officers a description of an African American male wearing a green hoodie, who she reported to have already broken a window out.
According to police, when officers arrived, the described suspect was located behind the apartment and was asked to ‘stop’ as he started walking away. The suspect then fled, prompting the officer to raido for pursuit assistance. When the officer caught up to the suspect behind an auto parts store and attempted to put him into custody, a fight broke out between the officer and suspect. Another officer arrived at the scene shortly after and the suspect was placed in handcuffs. He was alleged to have broken out several windows in the apartment and made threats to the victim. Dearius Hawthorne, 20, was charged with burglary, evading arrest and assaulting a peace officer.
While arresting Hawthorne, at the scene, another individual arrived and began cursing and threatening the victim. This person was warned repeatedly to ‘stop’ threatening the original calling victim. Officers separated her from the apartment, at which time she turned and started for the victim. When an officer tried to deter her, she struck him several times in the chest, face and chin. She was also arrested. Violet Gillean, 22, of Paris, was charged with threatening assault, resisting arrest and assaulting a peace officer.
An individual was arrested for public intoxication in the 700 block of E. Austin Avenue, when a warrant check revealed a parole warrant for the charge of kidnapping out of California. Justin Gray, 28, of Paris, was arrested and booked on the charge.
