The time of year has come for the 23rd annual Lamar County Crime Stoppers Rodeo. The event — sponsored by Toyota of Paris and James Hodge Motors — will be held at the Paris Rodeo & Horse Club Arena on Saturday, June 23, at 7:30pm. Tickets are $5 at the gates and children under 12 years old may enter for free.
Like previous Crime Stoppers rodeos, this year’s event will be in aranch rodeo format and will include events such as Team Penning, Maverick Branding, Wild Cow Milking, Pasture Roping, Doctoring, and the Double Mugging. There will also be a Calf Scramble for kids 12 and under with cash prizes awarded for first, second, and third places, for both boys and girls.
The ranch rodeo format is made up of events designed to be types of activities that ranching cowboys would do daily, as opposed to a regular rodeo with bull riding, barrel racing, steer wrestling and so on. Ten teams are entered this year featuring cowboys from ranches in surrounding areas. In addition to the rodeo’s events, entertainment is scheduled for the crowd as well.
As in years past, programs will be sold at the event for $2 which will in turn make persons eligible to win door prizes that will be given away throughout the rodeo. However, this year the program will also offer some other entertainment supplies. During the rodeo, a Paper Airplane competition will be held, sponsored by Paris Chevrolet, which is new this year. During the contest, a truck will be driven around the arena and spectators will attempt to throw their paper airplanes — which are supplied in the program — into the bed of the truck. All the paper airplanes that are in the truck bed when it comes to a stop will be awarded a share of the $200 prize.
There will also be Crossword Puzzle competition — sponsored by Sanitation Solutions — featuring event sponsors. The competition will begin when the rodeo ends. Completed crosswords can be mailed to the Crime Stoppers office. Correct puzzles will be entered into a drawing for $50 cash.
This is Lamar County Crime Stoppers biggest fundraiser each year. The money that is raised during this event is what keeps the organization going.
Lamar County Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization that operates an anonymous tip line designed to retrieve information on crime in the community and forward that information to law enforcement. In return for tips received from the community, Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards of up to $1000 for information that leads to arrests of persons responsible. A few years ago, Lamar County Crime Stoppers add the capability of receiving tips via their website, www.903-785-TIPS.com Persons can go there and leave a tip anonymously and can engage in a two-way dialog with the coordinator in order to gain even more information about the crime reported. In 2008, LCCS also added a text message feature that allows a person to send tips anonymously via text message by adding “TIP120″ in front of their message and sending it to “CRIMES” of 274637. This feature also works as a two-way dialog feature which allows persons to engage right from their cell phone or mobile device, making anonymous crime reporting as easy as ever.
Last year, with the information that was called in to Crime Stoppers, Law Enforcement was able to clear 88 cases, recover $27,000 of property, while arresting 95 persons. Since the inception of the Crime Stoppers program in 1985, over 3500 cases have been cleared, over $2.1 million in property has been recovered, and 1,954 arrests have been made.
