A Lamar County grand jury last week handed up an indictment to the 6th District Court for the charge of murder to 33-year old David Scott Powell, after being arrested for and accused of killing his father, 54-year old David Wayne Powell, in March.

The Lamar County Sheriff’s Office received the call reporting a deceased person in the 6500 block of Highway 82 West on March 16, and after preliminary autopsy results confirmed the cause of death to be extensive blunt force trauma, leading the medical examiner to rule the manner of death a homicide, according to Lamar County Sheriff Scott Cass.

During the investigation, sheriff detectives interviewed a male suspect that also resided at the residence the deceased man was found at and were subsequently able to gain a warrant of arrest from the district attorney’s office for David Scott Powell, the victim’s son.

Powell was charged with the crime upon arrest, and has now been indicted by a grand jury for murder.

The grand jury also handed up an indictment to the 6th District Court in May to a Juan Jose Salazar on the charge of Sexual Assault of a Child (counts 1 and 2), according to court records.

The majority of the remaining indictments in May were for the charges of drug possession, theft, felony possession of a firearm, driving while intoxicated and assault.
