Paris man charged with aggravated assault in connection with Christmas Eve complaint
A police investigation into alleged disorderly conduct in the 300 block of Stone Avenue on Sunday led initially to the arrest for public intoxication of Jermaine Dale Franklin, who was found passed out on a sidewalk.
The charges escalated after it was discovered that Franklin, whose address is listed as 635 Seventh St. NW, had two outstanding felony warrants.
Officer Curtis Garrett, public information officer for the Paris Police Department, said Franklin was accused of pointing a handgun at five people in the 900 block of Southwest Fifth Street on Christmas Eve.
Franklin was transferred to the Lamar County Jail, where he is held on felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon.
That was one of 14 arrests during the Friday-Sunday weekend, Garrett said. Of the 269 calls for service over the weekend, three were for residential burglaries.
The 13 other arrests included two cases that normally are misdemeanors, but were enhanced to felonies because of two or more previous convictions of the same offense:
- Dennis Earl Davidson, 43, of 235 Eighth Street, Roxton. He was arrested in the 900 block of Clarksville Street on Friday after it was reported he attempted to leave the store with a pack of beer. Theft of property under $1,500 is normally a misdemeanor, but Davidson has two or more previous convictions for theft under $1,500. He is being held on $5,000 bond.
- Eddie Randy Burns, 1, of 106 Fourth St. NW, was arrested in the 1200 block of West Campbell St. for suspicion of driving while intoxicated. Further investigation revealed he had two previous DWI convictions, resulting in enhancement to a felony.
